"But God", a game changer
There is something to be said about the phrase, "But God". Think about it. It really is a game changer.
For you and me, there may not be two more hopeful words we could speak. These two words display God's power in changing lives and circumstances.
The first time we see this phrase is in Genesis 50 amidst the story of Joseph. Do you know Joseph's story? If not, you should check it out. It is really amazing.
I'll give you the basic summary here. Joseph was his father's favorite. His brothers hated him and sold him into slavery.
It sounds awful. But, what we find out that Joseph is a man of tremendous character and faith. God uses him in every situation he falls into it.
At his master's house, he is promoted to head of the house. He is falsely accused and thrown in jail. There he is given responsibilities and even leadership over other inmates.
Eventually Joseph gets out of jail and interprets a dream for Pharaoh. A great famine was about to hit Egypt. Joseph saves the day and develops a plan to store grain for the coming years.
Here's the twist: Joseph's family needs food. His brothers end up going to Joseph for help without knowing it is Joseph. But, Joseph sees them and he knows exactly who they are.
Joseph controls himself until their second trip to come back for grain. And finally, he reveals himself to his brothers and he lets his guard down in this powerful emotional moment.
Genesis 50:18-21 "His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them."
What began as his brothers selling Joseph into slavery leads him into a position to be able to save all of Egypt and the world from a famine, that includes his very own family.
"But God" is a powerful phrase.
